• WAF – 2018

While I while away time on my self-inflicted sabbatical there have been advices from several quarters, one special one coming from my co-pilot as I steered the Microlight over the cool climes of Jakkur and Hebbal, prodding me to get back to work, in his words, “do not rust, whatever you may”, I very reluctantly after more than a month of receiving that advice, opened my favourite site for architecture dope, archdaily.com and trundle upon the news of the World Architecture Festival held in Amsterdam. They have crowned the World Building of the Year and I was so happy to note that WOHA’s Kampung Admiralty Project in Singapore wearing the crown. For starters the WAF is my personal favourite Architecture Awards and then WOHA are my favourite architects from the island city not only because their work is spectacular and my kind but also because Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell taught us at the National University of Singapore. Having attended the WAF Awards in 2012 and 2013, I really enjoyed the format of presentations, the open and diverse diaspora, architects, mind you both star and humbler ones share the stage along with critics and thinkers alike to have a meaningful discussion on design, specifically architectural design.

    section-001.jpg

Now Kampung Admiralty from what I gather is a typical WOHA project, just that their evolving style may have yet reached its high-point with this building. From the horse’s mouth, as the architects claim it is a vertical kampung (village), layered like a club-sandwich with community spaces tucked in the podium along with a medical centre above which rest the apartments for the elderly. With a large ageing populace the island country has been innovating on homes for the elderly for a while now, but the concept of this kampung is winning as it ties community, nature and a host of other factors that make the village more village like! A small enough, close-knit unit. Inter-generational bonding and active ageing as the architects put it. The plan is simple enough, the elevation practically a foliage but whats eye-catching in the concept is the spirit or rather the essence. With increased sustainability ideals in every architect’s mind, greenery incorporated into the building is now a common factor. Terraced structures with ample maintainable greens have come a long way since the days of Ken Yeang’s often teased “hairy buildings”. Today greenery is a luxury, “every window with a green view” is a phrase that makes its way to every realty brochure.

Green’s the way to go, not just highly maintained green, but mostly laissez faire greens. Its a vision to the eyes, a welcome break to the lungs and a favour to smaller specie of flora and fauna for sure. I’d bet its a much welcome to combat global warming, air-pollution, health disorders and such, much more welcome than inventing products in factories to do just the same. Sustainability could be truly sustainable, a better way would certainly be to embrace greenery and open up our spaces, living or working to nature.

  • The Perils of being a Hands-on Mom!

    bitmoji-20181204010335

This morning I woke up from a dream where I was feeding my baby, slowly hour after hour of tiny morsels being finely installed into the tiny mouth of my 10-month old. I didn’t know whether to be sad that even in my dreams I am doing what takes up half of my waking hours! (6-hours is what I average on my munchkins daily feeds), or happy that after about 10-months I slept enough to actually have a dream, I finally settled for the latter. Sleep is extremely precious, not only in this hyper-connected, gadget-driven, blue-light washed and internet-friendly world, but especially for the primary care-giver of a newly welcomed life. While care-giving to an infant is deeply satisfying and soul-enriching and happiness-inducing, it does nothing to the mind. The monkey mind needs its fix while the heart needs its cuddles and thus begins the perils of being a hands-on mother where the heart clearly wins and the mind is left behind.

Sleep takes the first beating, I must say right from the delivery room =) There is no mention in any pregnancy book on how to deal with the lack of sleep maybe because there is in reality no best way to deal with the lack of one wheel in the trio of eat, sleep and exercise. The second to take a massive beating is exercise, no lifting the baby does not count as exercise, nor do all the antics to entertain. Finally one is so tired to care and the stresses of constant attention demands makes reaching out to the candy box and deeply delicious chocolate that much easier, not to forget the wreck that lack of sleep can cause. Boy babies I am told are extra demanding, however I make no gender bias, at least not yet. And thus health takes a toss. Sweet sixteen is far far away, while its been quite a while since I pondered over the triumph of brown eye-liner over black. Giving birth may not be but raising a baby is definitely aging!!! And even if you do manage a burst of energy, there will be I assure you no time to catch up on beauty sleep, to exercise like a diva or to eat like a princess unless ofcourse one hires a Nanny. a top-notch one ofcourse, who will not show your precious smartphone videos to make him eat, or drug him to sleep with formula or simply has enough integrity to do as you say. as you say. Because motherhood can make the most easy-going ones among us to also stand up and take stock! Things that never mattered to you will then suddenly begin to matter and God help the worrying kinds, there will be no end to the things one can worry about =D

    The silver lining you ask?

For starters, being a hands-on Mom will satiate all your desires to have more children! One is enough is the new slogan. No more hum do, hamare do. Secondly when the baby switches from cries of terror to a silent smile and a phew simply by your touch, in the lowest fraction of a second, that is you experience the phrase ‘mothers touch’, your day, week, year, decade, in short life, will be made. There is no feeling that comes close to experiencing magic, true love is half as magical I suppose. The arms of the little ones around your neck is again a thing of joy but definitely not as much. Oh then, there is the being around to witness the first roll-over, the first crawl, the first stand, the first walk and all the firsts there are to witness. Am sure after a point we all mothers would give up on the first-times cause the first-times are not always all that special. While we toil away to hope to inculcate values in our little angels, those heavenly virtues we all wish we had and so many of us actually do, we look up to our parents with new found respect and love, wondering whether we were so hard and harsh on them too. We see their sacrifices in ours and feel their pain in ours. As they may have lost themselves to us, we lose ourselves to our little knights or princesses and then look back on all the danger they present to us praying softly yet fervently for their safety. The biggest peril may be that of fear and the greatest safety, love. No wonder the opposite of fear is love. And the greatest thing of being a hands-on Mom is the stages of learning that finally yield to love. Selfless love, warm love, happy love, where appearances do not matter and the only beauty fix you have is the warmth of the heart and the kind smile that will light up your face making you beam. The dangers then lead to the learnings that then lead to winnings and boy what a lottery it is!

Ken Poirot couldn’t have been more right to say,

“True beauty is a warm heart, a kind soul and an attentive ear!”

But the greatest silver-lining of them all is truly that one day it will end. The joy that lies in impermanence. On all matters ofcourse =)

  • To travel is to live. We travel not to escape life, but for life to not escape us. Dream, do, discover. The umpteen travel quotes or rather to travel quotes have been flooding my mailbox and making their way into my head since time immemorial. More recently flooded with Mommy-hormones, I took several journeys of a lifetime right from my living quarters! However what we say, what we do sometimes pale in comparison to what we go see, cause ten times to one the world is mightier than the home! And so when road trips beckoned to near-by locales of Coorg and Bandipur I was elated. Though not much a fan of road-trips (unless ofcourse we walk the entire way, ;)), I braved the journeys to see and experience some beautiful properties, monsoon greens that are greener than green and ofcourse some exotic wildlife. Here’s are two postcards that spell the sheer gorgeousness of monsoon in Karnataka.

    Coorg

Karnataka with its red soil and ideal precipitation is home to a beautiful landscape of forests, greenery that comes alive especially in the monsoon. Kodagu, a district in the state is known for its spices, white pepper as such, brave men, beautiful women and a clime that brought to it the title, Scotland of India. The beauty of experiencing Coorg is amplified or rather largely hinged on the property that one stays in, its like almost a disclaimer. The local joints, sightseeing is nothing much, but if one lands up in a property that is itself a piece of art, then the charm is something else altogether. While family retreats are many, here’s one that is truly spectacular. Tamara, designed by Trivandram based Iyer and Mahesh architects uses wood in a warm and stylish way. The resort is spread over a vast number of acres boasting of terrific flora and fauna ideal for quiet walks and is a treat for nature lovers including a waterfall. The architects have cantilevered the main restaurant and bar over the waterfall, aptly calling it the fall all with glass flooring to look down at the gushing water. The finish is immaculate and the food lovely. A beautiful luxury resort to experience Coorg in all its natural glory!

    Bandipur

Spotting a tiger has got to be the highlight of any trip if that happens, however, the Windflower in Bandipur is so natural and eco-friendly that it steals one’s heart with the heavily wooded central space. Extremely nimble-footed, the architecture is inward looking, luxurious in proportion and unassuming in its build. The tusker trails that the resort provides ensures activities like nature walk, wild safaris, mountain-biking, ayurvedic treatments and a host of others to supplement one’s experience of nature. The lovely Nilgiris and the Mudumalai National Park are in close proximity. Innumerable deer, pea-cocks, birds and the mighty tiger are some of the animals we were able to sight in the luxurious monsoon greens. The Windflower is located within the Bandipur National Park and allows animals to pass through the resort, so watching out and being aware is crucial and the feels exciting!

  • Well technically it was a branch that whacked my 5-month old baby on the head and another twig that tore through his arm but the magnitude that had on my life was nothing short of a meteor. For starters it woke me out of my slumber, broke the massive block in my head and got me back to life. Some of us are very protective of our children while others are very protective of our lives. While it is important to have our priorities right, most times it is simply right to trust our gut, cause as they say energy never lies. While my little fellow may have forgotten the incident, he does have a battle scar that he may question me about when he grows up! While it is largely unbecoming to question the counsel of an infant’s mother, it is more than just disrespectful to pay no heed to her repeated requests. That’s probably just how tiger moms are born and how the human race survives. Its not a survival of the fittest, rather the survival of the luckiest. 😃

  • It’s been almost half a year since my heart has been out and about beating in the chest of my little one. There is no sentence that sums the feeling of being a mother. Especially of an infant. I do hope in good time (read when the boy is married) I will be ready to finally let him go to a young lass, but till then he’s all mine! (and the husband’s ofcourse 😅)

Pouring all my energy and attention on my little one I do have a few observations to make on motherhood. From a tiger mom to a chill mom, from a happy loaner to super protective I have oscillated many a scale to the pride of some and much to the chagrin of others. Definitely wiser here is a piece of my mind.

    1. Your happiness is in your pocket. And you’d better keep it that way.

    2. Better safe than sorry. There is nothing called over-prepared.

    3. Respect is not negotiated. It is earned.

    4. You cannot please everybody. Including yourself all the time.

    5. There is such a thing as sticking your ground. And emerging victorious.

    6. Honesty is the best policy. Even if the truth kills you.

    7. Follow your intuition. Especially as a mother for your child.

  • Ten little fingers, ten little feet

A smile from you is no mean feat

However much you are a treat

For with charm you aptly greet
As you teach me to slowly lead

In the offing is a steady steed

For all your growing up needs

And timing all your needy feeds
As an epitome of love pure love

There is the learning of true love

Like the beauty of a pretty dove

    Such times fill treasure troves
For in all the loving and giving

    We often find life’s beguiling

In the arms of a lil tiny being

    Who con’s all the foreseeing
There is nothing to be foretold

The future is not a thing sold

    Despite all the immense cold

We are perfectly cut to the mold
Dainty is as dainty surely does

No matter all the crazy fuzz

As daylight blurs into night time

I jive to a sweet pleasant rhyme
May you finely grow and be

    A sturdy hundred and three

    Super happy and carefree

    Splendidly climbing trees
A month how soon youll be

Not much to do but wait and see

    Your nimbleness and harmony

And all the joy you bring to me!

  • Mere Paas Maa hain!

Well seriously! The romanised hindi literally translates to, I have Mom. (and that makes all the difference, thereby tilting the world in my favour) I am my Mom’s biggest fan, cause after all she brought up (with ample inputs from Dad) my most favourite person 😉 As I make great efforts to be the best version of myself, here’s a cheer to my coolest, smartest, funniest, boldest, wisest, happiest and hence prettiest Mom! Her superpower? She can find humour and laugh at anything brightening up the dullest of days.

    Mom you are lit

    always such a hit

    There’s no decree

    you cant set free

    Setting an example

    giving us a sample

    Of how to perceive

    give and receive

    To be in jest

    or else in rest

    The passions set

    in all earnestness

    For in celebration

    we forget to ration

    Thats a good way

    making us sway

    Living it up fully

    never once unruly

    In every chance

    taking on romance

    A reason to dance

    or simply to prance

    Teaching to read

    and planting the seed

    Editing the write

    making it right

    Critiquing the art

    setting the start

    Charging creativity

    with every activity

    Finding potential

    in diverse cadential

    Sprinkling a special

    in all essential

    Making sure I love

    every bit of now

    All questions met

    with answers set

    Making me believe

    in amore faati

    Life’s a breeze

    So joyful and free

    with my Mummy

    As busy as the bee

    as happy as the sea

    as strong as the knee

    as calm as the chi

    as wise as the duree

    as game as the oui

    as easy as the breeze

    as perfect at the brie

    For I strive to be

    what you are to me!

     #storkarrives #with #the #bundleofjoy

39 weeks! Well not really complete, but short of two days the little bean decided to pop. He chose a perfect Sunday and the mid-morning hours. Just like going to work he started business at 10 am and came out a little before lunch-time! Having declared ofcourse that he (or I) were ‘too posh to push’. How much ever I tried positive thinking, prenatal yoga to stir the odds in favour of a normal delivery, there were other plans. All for the best. So au natural may well not be the best option available in life, and that’s when we would rather thank technology. A statistically low complication, and some amount of pain later here I am with our bundle of joy, jotting in the last post of OMB! A parting wisecrack, one for the road, “There are things we cannot control, and thank God for that”. As I give up control on aspects of life, I have just finished reading, Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. The takeaway from that book – Buddha recommends that we follow a non-pursuit of achievements or of feelings, instead what we could pursue is to “know thyself”! While I bury myself in endless diapers and lullabies, thank you for following my blog. Its back to business for now 🙂

38 weeks! To arrive at one thing to do in life is extremely difficult, especially if you are one with a myriad of interests. However then, one would believe that happiness or enjoyment could be the moral compass to guide one all the way through life. This week was an ode to feeling, to learn to do as one feels and to follow the heart as and how it leads in consultation with the brain of course. As you do, so you feel or rather as you feel, so you do! With two weeks to go for the full term I find myself very calm and relaxed. Its as if the transformation of all the nine months are finally coming to an end. It is a much needed transformation as one prepares to bring a new life, to steady oneself to understand the responsibilities and tumultuous changes that they may all bring. If there was one goal in life it would be that of loving oneself! The festival of Kites, Sankranthi saw a rather fun Kite festival with professional fliers hosting up an array of kites into the blue clear skies. What fun! With Mary Poppins on my mind I couldn’t help but play the tune ‘lets go fly a kite’ on repeat in my head!! There is so much to do in this world, so much to see and enjoy that a zest for life, true appreciation, creativity, usefulness and giving one’s own uniqueness an expression are only but a few ways of harnessing the power of living.
