• Am no typically bake sale mom,

My forte cant ever feed you nom,

I can do no cupcakes or brownies,

But with me around there some,

will make no room for frownies,

    Lots of imagination and funnies,

Will make one lose track of runnies,

The vast spectacle of the universe,

Is always ready for some inverse,

Tiger parenting is now so passΓ©,

    The proverbial ROI so unnecessary,

As the cherubic thugs live free,

Life particularly so easy and breezy,

    Arting about the topsy-turvy world,

There is much to do, to be heard,

In the poetry of Keats, Wordsworth,

Daffodils to smell, hugs to trees of girth,

Much ado to them Shakespeare’s words,

The many worlds to see and paths to twirl,

Beats of fun, in weathering beautiful curls,

For there are aplenty roads to take forth,

That lead to happiness and personal growth,

In tomes of text may we bury ourselves,

Or take the high road across the felts,

Through starry nights and sunny shells,

Maybe dance to the tunes that utterly melts,

Use them senses with all their snuggy dwells,

What I can do is still pretty clear; and

that is to love you unconditionally dear!

  • Data is the new currency, attention the new stock option and friends list the new incentive. Are you living a Grammable life? Oops I mean a worthy life? Are your days passing without – ‘one for the gram’ picture? We are living in a highly digital world, where there is nothing free, if it is free then well we are the currency, our attention, our information. After watching ‘The Social Dilemma’ and having my phone pickpocketed, literally on a walk around the neighbourhood, and not having social media help me track the average criminal or even my phone back, am here putting thoughts to paper, well digital paper.

First of all, no phone equals to peace of mind. And second of all? Peace of mind is greatly over-rated. Having no phone kept me out of the loop with the family, friends, and had me miss Day 1 of a 12 day course that tunes in once a week for 12 weeks. Thats because the course organisers found it easier to send the participants the zoom link on a whatsapp group rather than send us an email or put out the link on the dashboard (which would be a more sensible option). And a no phone meant no ways that I could receive OTPs, people who wanted to frantically get in touch with me or any such. And then the most important, no easy access to the FAANG group. Thats Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google, the last two managed to stay with me without the phone, but Facebook and its baby Instagram was totally out of the loop. Now one week without Insta and Facebook brought me out of depression, one that I constantly put myself into, mainly gauging my location on this map called life largely looking sideways at everyone on their own racetraps, oops race tracks. And that was really really nice.

In Social Dilemma, Tristan Harris mainly points out the fact that social media traps one, manipulates behaviour, rigs elections, lobbies for cases, brings governments to their knees and completely puts each person on a completely different advantage or should we say disadvantage with reality being different for different people. The Facebook addict would argue that when newspapers came first, it could do all the above and as easily manipulate naive minds and get people to do just as they pleased, televisions were as easily criticised when they debuted, people said they would rot the mind, which they absolutely do, and one also pointed out how cars during their debut were criticised to make death more easy. The argument provided by Harris is not just true, its plain shocking. The last time I saw a documentary as compelling was when I watched ‘Forks over Knives’ and turned vegan, without enough supplements, deficiencies galore and I nearly ran out of the essential vitamins. So no, this time around am not falling for a documentary headfirst without proper research even if it guarantees me inner peace. Here’s my musings on the matter.

No man is an island and we need the society just as undeniably as we make the society. But social media? Instant social media? When I am busy looking at the lives of others, (it does keep me updated about my friends halfway across the globe in half of a split second) I tend to miss smelling the roses in front of me, living my life, and thats just unforgivable. But without context, without other what are we, but then what we do thrive on in conversation, hearing and being heard, instantaneously, not trolling out to blank space but actually having verbal and non-verbal cues, the expression on one’s face, the tone of one’s voice. Though that is something that can be just as easily be captured by the video options on most social media. In the Happiness advantage by Shawn Achor, happiness is largely hinged on our interpersonal relationships, it is in fact the most important piece in the puzzle called happiness. Social media is a wonderful way to harness and build on interpersonal relationships. Though it connects the globe from far it probably makes one disconnect from the globe up close.

A balance is probably then the key, moderation as always, the middle path, get the best of both, as most advice, but then on one path one is sure to miss the other, so no, moderation is not the key here. There are tons of businesses that work completely online, its for work, to make money, to be known, to spread word, and there are extremely successful business people out there who make money by the millions, this makes social media unbelievably important for their bread and butter. With information so easily available it would certainly be a pity if we could not use it, as is with out respective brains, if your brain could be washed then well, it could as easily be done with a newspaper as it could by a friend, frenemy or enemy for that matter, it could just as easily be done by an advertisement say Fair & Lovely or a radio jingle. Everything around us serves as inspiration but at the end of the day it is upto us to be inspired or simply manipulated.

This post is rather long, cause the dilemma has been around quite long, so has the advantage. When the great leaders who are also great readers read, read Bill Gates, Charlie Munger, Warren Buffet they also set enough time to think. Readers who do not spend time to process all the data and do not sufficiently mull over the matter or in other words think, are not readers who could be leaders. Every piece of information that we consume, whether its a comment to a picture, the picture itself, news update, commentary or even blog post like this one, the information is just that, information and today the world is full of information, how we process that information in our minds and further how we decide to act upon it solely depends on one.

We are mostly certainly the only advantage we have. Our minds, our soles, our very nature, inherently we are all good people, manipulated only when we are not being aware of ourselves. Being aware of ourselves, well thats the advantage. Facebook cannot be responsible for mass killings, nor can they be held responsible for showing us ads of shoes just cause we said we’d buy some shoes. Try asking out aloud how do I get off google, and then check your google, the first search will be articles on how to get off Google, so much for artificial intelligence, it could be trapped within itself, just like real intelligence. The various social platforms echo whats already in our minds, darn a little too highly. The amplification may well mean well, if our initial searches and talks mean well, or the amplification may seem terrible, if our talks mean so. We may hold the social tech bigwigs responsible for editing data and ask them to take down things that do not serve us well, ask for monitors in the class because well, we cannot monitor ourselves. If one is not a self-starter than we need an environment to help us start, think of the woman on a diet who throws out all candy out of her house and does not walk past a Haggen Das even if her life depended on it. Is that what we are? Trapped by impulses and need an environment to make us tick and stick to our goals?

What we need to do is not throw the candy out of the house, we need to train our greatest asset to be our greatest advantage, the mind. The truly self-starting, self-motivated individual will feel a fire in the belly and know when to start and when to stop, the solution is to always be self-aware. To be the proverbial lotus in the pond. To rise out of still waters, to know thyself. Social media, digital technology is a tool, it is a gateway to peace of mind, to excitement, to happiness, to knowledge to whatever we may want if we can know ourselves well. This is very exciting age to live in and the future will only be more and more exciting. Its true by buying books on the kindle we are only filling the coffers of one A in the FAANG acronym. Since we can carry the book anywhere we want but we can never share it. So using one’s discretion at this point is paramount, does the book do well with resharing? do I want it to be with me always? could it make a great gift? Do I have the space for it right now? Do I need to remember parts of it? This is just an example but the same applies to everything related to technology. Does this information do well to be shared? Questions like that. We can only increase our self-awareness questions when we are able to question ourselves. Therefore question everything. Being one-hundred percent you is the need of the hour. Friends are vacationing in the Carribean? Sure, you want to go? Sure, would that be this years goal? Sure. And hence build the questionaire, build the thought and build the mind. Trick the system to find advantage in it, for one the least one can do is to be predictable.

When I ask Netflix for suggestions the algorithm keeps me, me every single time. It shows me the same type of shows, same type of documentaries how about surprising the algorithm then? Then life is exciting, and maybe for once one can get a different perspective on things. What is a vacation if not a refreshing of the mind and a change in perspective. I learn, my curiousity is piqued and further satiated by the things I read, hear and watch. Sometimes inspiration comes from a social media feed, sometimes it comes a legendary tome by Shakespeare, sometimes from a walk around the neighbourhood, a pattern here and a couch there, a detail here and an elevation there, but none of it is true inspiration and good inspiration at that unless I mull on it or filter out some thinking about it. There is no formula in numbers or values, no 5 hour screen time or no ‘delete your apps from your phone’, no stop feeding them data or no give them your attention. Dont make them rich cannot and should not be your life motto. One’s mind at the end of it, one’s awareness, one’s own filter is the advantage every single time.

This is a long post, just like whats on social media, it’s garbled, goes off in all directions and teases you with some provoking, so here’s the exercise, skim it to lap up what you need, and then take only that. Leave the rest, like they say, to the universe, it can do with a lot of space dust. For yourself, be glad to be your own advantage, for you are most certainly your own social advantage.

  • When leaders take on huge challenges, the result in imminent and for all to savour. The Markook Reservoir also labelled the Konda Pochamma Sagar Reservoir is one such challenge which was aptly addressed by the Chief Minister of Telangana State in India.

The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation project brings water from the Rivers Pranhita andΒ  Godavari to an arid plateau area covering a distance of about 500 kms. It uses about 1800km canal network brings about 240 TMC of water used to culture land, provide water to the city of Hyderabad and the nearby villages. As the world’s largest lift irrigation project, this project lifts water to a MSL of about 621 meters that is higher than the Colorado lift irrigation project in the USA and the Great Man-made River in Libya. The entire project has about 22 pump houses that consume 3767MW of power costing the state about Rs 80,000 crore. The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation project makes the arid Deccan Plateau of Telanagana extremely arable, it is a matter of pride for Telangana putting it firmly on the world map for sure! It will most certainly end the water woes of a state so terribly parched.

Doing the most touristy thing that we’ve done in the last 5 months we belted up and drove to the Markook Resevoir from the city of Hyderabad. Knowing nothing much about the reservoir or the Kaleshwaram project (except for the costs), I was stunned to see the beautiful bund and a sprawling reservoir that it holds. Not to forget the mega traffic jam on the bund! As we stop talking and obsessing over the white elephant in the room – a five letter word, annexed by a number, starting with a C and ending with a D, it seems like the outdoorsy tribe of the city decided to treat their senses to this delectable part of the Kaleshwaram project closest to the city. Not knowing what to expect made it extremely adventurous, but people were even trekking over the stone bund in the fine weather. As we shun the malls and make our way to more natural sights, this man-made wonder made my day in an otherwise home-bound lockdown times. Being a tourist is the best feeling for sure, even if its the oft-beat or less than oft-beaten tracks. Taking a U-turn on the narrow bund was as exciting as seeing this vast body of water, as was being a part of a traffic jam after ages!

Again a no picture post, dear readers, but here’s a link to feast those eyes on!

  • Some things in life leave a lasting impression on one, and this one is something I crash landed onto and how! Never one to watch tv series in a different language, solely riding on subtitles I finally took the leap. Like the film Parasite’s director Bong Joon-ho said during his Oscar acceptance speech, if one can climb over the one inch barrier of subtitles whole new worlds open up, and what a world it is now!

Now this is one show that is brilliant in every respect, story, characters, settings, cast, dialogues, wit and brevity. The lead characters are as flawless as their skin. The story is as flawless as it’s locations and even if the story is highly unrealistic it is very endearing. If I could have a writer to write out my life it would have to be Park Ji-eun, the writer of this one for sure. Would not mind mouthing the dialogues that she has written for sure. True love, true pining, true longing, heart-pumping humour and a huge dose of melodrama make up for this very addictive show. As a work of art, there ought to be several naysayers who may not agree or even like this one, but for me I cant stop recommending it to everyone I know. It has struck a chord with me and obviously the dream will always be to have someone look at you the way Captain Ri looks at Yoon Se-Ri!

Switzerland on its part does so well on many counts. The most picturesque part of the Alps lay in this beautiful country that supplies unlimited Bliss on all accounts. The evil characters are evil for no reason, like in life, and are eventually surmounted at all costs, in fact they drive the story forward and it’s thanks to them that the lead characters end up having to spend unaccounted time together and falling more deeply than ever in love. Upon looking up the names, Hyun Bin and Son Ye-Jin have the best of dialogues as do the other two leads too. There is comedy, there is North Korea and then there is South Korea, a country that has wowed the world on more than one account whether it is Samsung or it is Innisfree, the technological advancement and the fancy coloured life, it is all very well encapsulated in K-pop, K-drama and all the other entertainment styles that they have unfurled upon the world. I couldnt imagine the remake of the story in any other language, for the nuances of the setting could not be the same. A heroine falling, oops descending from the heavens above into the arms of a dashing hero is honestly all that dreams are made up of. But this one is one step over, its what life should be made up of.

In the last episodes, the small acts of thoughtfulness and kindness are very touching as Captain Ri schedules messages to Se-Ri about small insights into the day, the season and what it means. Unrealistic but heart tugging the simple acts of kindness are very pretty to feel, when further investigated the South Korean police finds CCTV footage of Captain Ri doing just random acts of kindness as he goes about it day. There is obviously nothing to frame him for. The show ends on a bittersweet note, and leaves the viewer wanting for more, the sweetest locales on Switzerland make it a tad more palatable. The piano music is brilliant, it makes for a wonderful background score. Infact everything about the show is praiseworthy, no wonder it is the highest rated tvN drama in Korea. Loving it so much I did embark to watch some more K-dramas but none touched a chord like this one. The strong, silent hero who doesnt speak much and the peppy, witty heroine who speaks very freely with a whole lot of history behind them with a divide in countries and people just make one want the reunification of North and South Korea to happen sooner. A trip to Korea will be on the list of every person who views this show.

For me it felt more than just a web-show. It made me want them to be real, and thats quite something! In other words, Korea, South Korea I crash landed on you! Needless to say after watching this show, I got so super conscious of my skin (that has definitely has gone through a rough patch, literally the last two years) and got myself a bunch of products from Innisfree. I looked up South Korea, then remembered a book I read by a Korean author that I would also recommend, the book is called Pachinko, (whiles here’s my review on the book Pachinko), played the OST of Crash Landing on you on loop, watched Hyun Bin and Ye-Jin’s videos on Swoon, read their interviews on zoom, they both seem to be so endearing just like in the show, then read up some more about Koreans in general, including the General (whom we will not talk about), heard interviews of defectors from the North, 18 hairstyles for women and 28 hairstyles for men (now who wouldnt want to flee that!), looked up information on the general populace, read how men and women love playing golf I surmised (another so relatable fact for I love golf), another fact- the US LGPA made knowledge of English mandatory in professional golf tournaments to keep up with the Korean domination (somebody please make it mandatory for their shows too!!), tried watching another K-drama ‘Its OK to not be OK’, her clothes make for another blog post for sure, brushed up my knowledge about the city called Seoul (pronounced Soul), danced to ‘Gangnam style’ for a bit, no a lot, got nostalgic about relishing Bibimbap on three different occasions, one in on Orchard Street in Singapore with Zen, one in Jaisalmer with Nishil and one in Boston with Kritika, Korea has obviously got into the nook and corner of the world(!), looked up for Korean bowls to recreate the Bibimbap experience (which is not my cup of tea), binged again on Bin-Jin, found myself brewing barley tea, got myself a jade derma-roller, ate more vegetables, researched Jeju island, prodded the husband about making a trip to Korea, spent days looking at a birds eye view of Korea, both North and South, and then drew up a 7-day itinerary to Korea!

Netflix has kept me busy all week.

Obviously its not Netflix and Chill for me. The word is Netflix and Thrill!

p.s. A word of Caution: Watch this K-drama at your own risk cause it is so so addictive and one may end up putting their life on hold. This is a no picture post. But here’s a link to the show’s trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXMjTXL2Vks

    and then

Well, what can I say except you’re welcome!

This is my favourite soundtrack called ‘The Song for my Brother’. I love all the songs of the OST,Β  for whats not to love!

  • As I settle down to write about the lockdown an insistent sparrow comes knocking on my windowpane. Not shy of people, of being in close proximity to the built environment and particularly asking for nothing, it came by to say a quick hello stare at my screen and went its way. As I stay inside the cage this intelligent, social bird came by to say a quick hello and probably cheer me up a bit. Staying indoors is a lot like staying in the cage, in a demarcated space with family in close quarters and friends just a phone call away. This Lockdown has only made me grow terribly fonder of my walks at Lalbagh, pumping music at a brand new hotspot, in-person catching up sessions with my friends, dressing up for meetings, travelling across the globe on yet another adventure, delighting in brownies from Labonel or treating myself to a full-course Indo-Chinese meal at my favorite restaurant that dishes out piping dimsums, going swimming in the cool blue waters of the Bangalore Club, swimming in the salty waters of God-knows where my next destination could have been or simply stepping out for a spa and shopping weekend with my bestie. Better yet, send my little hero to play school for a couple of hours as I catch my breath or dash out a drawing is a thing of the past. As I sit down to entertain him with activities after activities I feel the need to get out, step out, refresh my mind and get a life! No amount of jumping jacks or split jumps seem to help, the endorphins are just don’t do what a walk in the park could effortlessly do, or a swim in the sea could easily achieve! The wise find happiness in what they have, contentment in what they receive, but this is not a question of happiness, it is a question of more happiness.

The only silver lining, well turns out that there are silver linings in everything, is that I am ever so grateful for the world outside. The Lock-down hours and staying indoors have made me look inwards constantly. And a journey into the should-haves, could haves, would haves is so unnecessary. I’d rather jump on a plane and make a journey to a place of wonder. Meditation is a new revelation, and the hours on concentrating on the breath there is peace, quiet and a subtle joy that is worth encapsulating into daily existence. Life’s distractions, although a tad plenty, are what keep the restless going I surmise, the journeys to inexplicable destinations, the travels to unknown lands, researching about a place, its architecture, getting there and immersing oneself into new worlds, whole new worlds so different and so alike your own. Never one to complain about noisy crowds or of lousy travel times, I could as well immerse myself on the drawing board or on construction sites, better still in nature or pointless shopping escapades. The unlimited family time has definitely been a bonus! That said, blessed are those who love staying home, the home birds, the home-bodys. For no domestic Goddess, for the explorers, the adventurers and the happening happiness seekers this is a cruel life, a caged life. The to-do list lies full, full of things to do at home and for a while done, the zoom calls, the improvement projects, both home and self. The love for the planet, for the fellow creatures, both mankind and alive-kind alike has grown leaps and bounds. Wildlife may have not exactly entered the Thames as the zillion memes have indicated, but they have entered our hearts. Every single day I stand out on the terrace during the hours of dusk and watch the sky unfold a beautiful ballet of colors. Sometimes powdery blue speckled by slits of pretty pink, sometimes a lilac with touches of golden yellow. It makes one recall of the Aurora Bourealis, just inverted in colors and non-dynamic, but just as beautiful. Life is beautiful in or out, in the mind or out in the world. It has been a lesson worth learning.

  • When minus is a plus!

We like in such skewed times, and we have a Virus to crown for it. The rapidly mutating and evolving virus is fast overtaking our immune systems, only time can tell us where this takes us for even the most well-intentioned keel is being brought to their knees. Staying home seems to be the only effective way to socially distance and keep out the Virus. It still is only seeming cause the virus can make its way into your home, through packaging materials, groceries, clothes and items we cannot completely do away with. Washing, sanitising and cleaning are absolutely necessary, as maybe building up the immunity and collaborating in true sense with the body’s defences. While we stay home, life has to go one. There is work to be done and things to accomplish not forgoing a body to take care of. How do our living spaces then singularly satisfy all our space requirements, morphing into a study, living, bedroom, gym, studio and every other thing?

In three words, Less is more.

    In more words, here goes.

A home usually comprises on a kitchen, a dining, a couple of bedrooms, bathrooms, verandahs, balconies or terraces. Three months into the lockdown and while everyone seems to be converting their homes into effective workspaces Ive reached a conclusion that this must not be done at the cost of stripping the home of its living quality. For when work is hectic we escape to our homes and in a state of a lockdown when homes are hectic where do we run to? Our homes should still be an oasis no matter how dire the situation is, it is going to Each home is different with some being more spacious and others less spacious, some holding more people than others. As children vie for computers and need space that is well insulated from distracting adults and the adults need insulation from distracting children it is paramount for each person to get their own space to thrive physically in a digital world. Making homes a workplace is fine as a stop-gap arrangement, but to make the space work or rather into a workspace for months or years altogether is a different ball-game. Moving walls or constructing partitions may not be the most feasible option for most people, so the point of questioning comes to that of furniture.

As well-meaning offices are handing out budgets or allowances for buying office furniture to elicit maximum productivity from employees thereby justifying the pay checks doled out during work from home times. It would make major sense to not overflow a work environment all over the house. While it is extremely tempting to double up the dining table as a study table and the living couch to a work desk, its not great for mental health, for it pays to have a living space to unwind in, do yoga, refresh the mind with movies. While the kitchen remains the kitchen and cannot double up into any other zone, the bedrooms make for great convertible spaces. This way we are mostly doubling up the bedroom to a work space in the day and making sure with about half and hour winding up time to convert it to a sleep/work space. That way the living space, dining and kitchen spaces remain an oasis of calm to break out during an otherwise hectic work or study day. Partitioning of spaces will not be necessary, and if rooms are shared then additional sound insulation measures can easily be employed. Here are a few essentials for working from home, specifically the bed room!

A few furniture essentials for the convertible bedroom.

A murphy bed – https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.closetworksinc.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2020%2F01%2FBanner_MurphyBed-scaled.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.closetworksinc.com%2Fcustom-murphy-bed-design%2F&tbnid=FIXey9XQKtQ0SM&vet=12ahUKEwi8-Jy-oLPqAhXdF7cAHcpfAwoQMygUegUIARCPAg..i&docid=LJj9AMgAfwVnnM&w=2560&h=2413&q=murphy%20beds&ved=2ahUKEwi8-Jy-oLPqAhXdF7cAHcpfAwoQMygUegUIARCPAg

    5. Murphy bed+Desk+Storage –Β https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5lzCzXR_38

While there are many vendors for the same, these are a few that I’d recommend. Besides, if with a few tweaks of hardware and a seasoned carpenter existing furniture can be easily transformed, an existing bed can be made a murphy bed and the like.Β  Here’s a link to one vendor of a Murphy bed- http://www.theironmonger.in/

The huge advantage in transforming furniture or tucking the white elephant in the room, namely the bed into the wall is the floor space that is instantly available. For doing that much wanted stretches or simply to clean up the space well or doubling up the space for other activities, a lot can be done. Lesser the things and lesser the surfaces, easier it is to maintain high levels of sanity and sanity ;D. Terraces or balconies if one has an access to become absolutely pivotal to getting a sense of the sun, fresh air and oxygen if one is kindly bestowed with a green thumb with a flair for plants. Doing minimal and getting the maximum results is the order of the day. Exercise or movement is a great way to improve circulation and walking about from one room to another every once in an hour is prescribed by every health enthusiast of a fitness coach. Following motivated people who inspire healthy habits keeps the exuberance for good health going. Health is wealth after all. Apart from physical health one must ensure enough rest and relaxation for the mind, for that allocating space or time in space for the most part is a useful way to partition time in the mind. With a very terrible sleep hygiene I end up endlessly scrolling on my smart phone reading interesting articles late into the night and hence not having enough sleep. Gadgets with their blue lights affect the sleep cycle and contribute to poor sleep; having them out of your sight and space at prescribed hours is a timely intervention.

Being positive is a life mantra for most, optimists win in life following this motto and while we make our lives veer towards the positive, sometimes and mostly in this case testing negative is a huge positive and minus is the new plus!

    Type: Featherlite Retail Store

    Location: Hyderabad, India

    Area: 4500 sft

    Year: 2019

    Photographs: Vishal Siddamsetty

If space is a canvas, one on which life enfolds, then retail spaces are a prima donna kind of canvas. A space where the product on display is the star, where space itself then takes a back-seat, mostly illuminating the goods while other times iterating as a showcase. The design of the Featherlite showroom tries to do just that, mostly illuminating the fine office-furniture and at other times transforming into a showcase that angles the goods. As a brand that deals in top of the line fine office furniture with a scientific bent, as a brand that believes in innovating work-spaces, the firm required a retail space that complements its philosophy.

The design concept of the Featherlite retail store in Jubilee Hills imbibes the concept of β€˜Hygge’. β€˜Hygge’ symbolizes a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. It refers of mental satiety and a feeling of security. In design, it translates to a pleasing sensibility with clever planning, zoning and a subtle palette of colors that provide clarity with great alacrity.

Furniture retail stores tend to be either crowded where the latest merchandise are displayed haphazardly for the hurried customer to choose quickly or are experience zones where every scenario is recreated in enclosed zones, in this case the customer ends up walking in and out of already created spaces leaving little room for a macro-view or even creativity. In the first case crowded furniture can be extremely over-whelming while in the second case there is no room for an individual’s own thought. When we began designing this retail store for the leading office furniture manufacturer from India we drew inspiration from the brand’s philosophy. As a brand that focuses on quality and conviviality, it is one that brings the air of gentle friendliness into a workspace instead of divisions and rigid hierarchy. The quality of a friendly working environment echoes with the notion of β€˜Hygge’. β€˜Hygge’ is a Danish and Norwegian word; it is a concept that is the defining characteristic of the Danish culture, a concept that makes them so refreshingly happy and progressive. We could do well to embrace the feeling of β€˜Hygge’ in our workspaces, our homes, our leisure spaces if not in our lives!

Translating the feeling of β€˜Hygge’ into a workspace, especially a store that makes the essential components of a workspace meant that we had to deal with having to display the company’s entire range without choking a customer with information or even playing it cool by enclosing too many spaces and displaying ready scenes. We began designing the 4500-odd sq ft of space by first breaking down walls. The floor was used as an office space earlier with cabins, executive rooms, conference rooms and workstations. After dismantling the walls we opened up windows letting in light and ventilation into the entire space. An open-office system brings much creativity to workspaces and the constant buzz is supposed to improve the brain’s plasticity and hence activity. A fact that makes writers write better, artists draw better and therefore choose Starbucks or other coffee shops to let their creative juices flow. The opening up of spaces was then followed by a tedious and meticulous planning zoning phase where we deliberated over the company’s collection and how to zone the furniture into the space. This was the most crucial part as we wanted to have an optimum balance of putting out the furniture available while creating zones that are not too enclosed. We then came up with a couple of full-height partitions to set the tone and some low-height partitions at four-feet height to punctuate spaces adequately.

The rapid rise of break-out office furniture in corporate offices has made furniture manufacturers launch innovative furniture ranging from pods to discussion sofas to interesting pouffes that allow for a more relaxed and vibrant work-culture, one that has been proven more productive time and again. Displaying these products in the retail store also add to the β€˜Hygge’ quotient of the store. The entrance lobby of the store overlooks a green terrace and makes for an inviting experience to the customer. A brief show-window or shop front highlights a few products and also provides a glimpse of the entire store. The front portion of the store houses a discussion space, an experiential zone where an outline of the products and projects can be provided to the client. The middle zone houses workstations that are flanked by chairs, breakout furniture and automated standing tables. The last zone of the store contains the more formal executive tables, discussion pods, and allied products sold by the store. Making a neat fit the layout is planned to bbe sustainable allowing for a more flexible display.

Following through with the β€˜Hygge’ concept, the entire store is covered with warm materials like carpet and wood using glass to offer transparency between spaces and subtle colors, pleasing textures to add to the engaging quality of the space. The full-height partitions are swathed with denser textures while the low-height partitions are splashed with a pearl-shine finish paint texture. Wooden art-e-facts subscribing to the wabi-sabi feel of the space remind one of the beauty that is brought by little pieces of life that are allowed to age and change with time. Keeping the company branding more light the product is brought to the forefront making the space both classy and fabulous. Lighting is used to highlight specific products, bringing some to the forefront and allowing others to step back setting a story in the space. The design elements are kept to a minimum allowing the product to shine and take the center-stage. The store design aims to highlight the merchandise and not over-power, it essentially serves as the backdrop to the office furniture it holds.

Darker grey-colored walls coupled with a concrete wall create a more formal ambience as they envelop the rear zone of the store. This setting serves as a perfect ambience for more posh and formal executive furniture. A more solid low-height planter is introduced in this zone to bring forward the furniture and showcase the more technical aspects of each unit. The more playful breakout furniture that includes PODS for meetings, collaborations, independent work, phone calls, more ergonomic seating and other innovative work-desks punctuates the gravitas of the executive furniture. The break-out space furniture also add splashes of color and lightness to the space. Some seating with dynamic displays are accounted for to facilitate more engaging discussions. The cafΓ© furniture is emphasized as a wall element as the light-weight cafΓ© chairs are enclosed in a metal grid. The placement of this furniture on the wall adds a quality of vertical dynamism to the space.

Designed and executed with the tenets of sustainability in perspective, the project seeks to be a perfect backdrop for the functioning of the store adding a sense of euphoria balanced by a salubrious dose of functionality. It pursues the concept of β€˜Hygge’ and demonstrates the feel-good vibes that could well make its way into the Indian workspace.

    Location: Secunderabad, India

    Area: 1200 sft

Modern homes have a plethora of roles to play, they are to be a sparkler of joy, a haven of peace, a matter of inspiration, a harbinger of creativity, an expression of individual persona and mostly just a place to be. With such lofty ideals in tow, homes take a lot of concern and care, give a lot in return and are absolutely delightful spaces to design especially when crafted for newly weds. On the drawing board this home is carved out of an existing house, cleverly adding in more space to make a beautiful and confortable house. As a renovation project, walls were moved out to take in the existing verandah into the drawing room, walls were dismantled to elaborate a brief pantry into a fully functional kitchen with a utility, windows were added, beams concealed and flooring modified as and how the space took form.

Designed to be eclectic with an equal measure of function, the VV home takes in sturdy functional planning with quirks of the couple. The entrance foyer of the family home sets the tone of the eclectic quotient, it is designed with a nook assembled with wood and metal. A wooden Buddha statue is placed delicately on a wooden twisted wood bark on a metal frame. The apartment opens up to a comfortable drawing room done up in tones of wood, metal, grey leather with cushions and quirks. A tree of life wall piece lends a sense of dynamism to the space. The flooring in wood is topped with carpet in the drawing area. The dining room accents the wood with a curio mantel piece and an infusion of a Jaali or mesh work pattern much like lace in the Pooja cabinetry. The open kitchen that looks into the dining space takers forth the brown and metal, balancing them both tediously with an accentuation of cream color. It is partitioned away from the utility with a cut-out partition that slides from side to side. A wooden panel is made to run along the wall thickness that also frames the kitchen. The couple captured moments from their recent wedding on a photo wall that is strategically placed between the curio mantel piece and the kitchen. A study zone is carefully tucked away in one corner of the hall way facing a window that lets in ample natural light and includes a book case in metal to showcase the couple most recent reading lists!

The kitchen is kept practical with opaque glass used above the countertop and below the upper shelves. The glass provides a writable surface to record recipes, notes, reminders or simply doodle for relief. The kitchen is completely equipped with all appliances and devices as the lady of the house is an avid baker and a food enthusiast. The brown and cream finishes in the kitchen are finished with a stylish light fixture that draws attention and yet melts the space into being a warm, welcoming and comforting zone.

The master bedroom is kept simple with color blocking in blue. A bed head board that is neat and linear becomes a foreground to the solid blue wall. The expansive wardrobes are supplemented by a chest of drawers and some seating for the couple. The tone in the bedroom is kept neat and simple with a hint of the couples combined love of travel and a penchant for collecting art and books. A second bedroom for guests that is less used is painted with a cheery yellow and accentuated with bright blue.

The apartment brings in delightful light and ventilation into all the spaces, it also brings in plants, succulents, indoor plants, art and reading material as decor elements into the spaces. It makes for an eclectic mix of architectural decor in the space. The spaces are designed with a fluency for ventilation and light, kept easy to maintain and reflect the couples interests and passions. Houses that reflect the personality of its inhabitants are the best houses, even better are the homes that gently nudge its occupants into better lives, inspire them to live their best life, nurture shared bonhomie and cultivate an essence of love and understanding. As Winston Churchill once famously proclaimed, β€œwe shape our buildings and thereafter they shape us”. This home has been shaped to foster the very ideals that the couple decided to bring into their homes and hence into their lives.

  • Am sitting stuck with glue

to the teepee and the marquee

aching literally to end the duree

The end known to a few

    muttering to be utterly carefree

without a clue, a rhyme or whee

    There is wonder that grew

out of time spent in sudden soiree

with leisure to spare boredom and thee

    The scales of creativity grew

making the most of the rotting brie

churning out quick, flitty, witty repartee

In the joy of dalgona brew

there is much cleaning up to do

a frantic tussle here and a huff hustle there

    Pottering about the shoe

    making maps of going where

showing each one just how much I care

    There is a hushed hue

    in sunlight that filter through

making the most of a time duty-free

    There is time for two

a little me and you here

in the aroma of delicious fare

There is fun in the new

a little air in as we breathe

    new goals come spiralling decree

    A very relaxed air dew

    to keep afar the bourgeoisie

and calling for an unusual pedigree

Am as relaxed as can be

in a world so kind and free

there is no doubt nothing to disagree

As the son flies from two

he started to slowly say three

learning very fast to climb a tree

So delighted to have a Choo

there is more than a one of many me

Its my hair I’m referring to

  • A place I live and I’d rather be, Covid or not!

  • Hello my dear readers!! Before I flit off my next blog on mommies of the animal kingdom, here’s -a big thank you to all of you reading my blog. Thank you for subscribing and thank you for sticking around. Just to ensure I don’t disappear away like I always do, I renewed (in time, phew!) my website and have armed myself with a whole bunch of things while constantly reminding myself to relax. The one thing I apparent can’t do but am determined to master this year. So while I’ve been missing in action here, I became a part of two book clubs. Yes two! One on Instagram called the IKIGAI book club where we read eclectic, vibrant books and converse with fellow readers virtually, spam their feeds with quotes from the book, remind them to read, bug them literally to pick up books we are reading and challenge them to an experience. It is also by the way, the worlds first experiential book club which I am personally super excited about. The second book club is one that is so real and hence so endearing. In the company of 6 girls, we read, meet, eat, laugh till tears well up in our eyes, opine and actually have book club questions that we answer. So so fun and so so amazing. So basically I’ve been upping my reading game and have given My Royal Bookness a comma, not yet a full stop. And since then I’ve also began ‘arting’ about and have put up stuff on my art page on Instagram. So you see I’ve been mostly on Instagram and have also been scattering my energies away. As my son is soon going to be a toddler and is halfway through his 1000 golden hours (the first three years of a human life) I’ve been a little more free and mulling on a few many things in my best interest that include an architecture career, investment lessons and yes ofcourse parenting styles.

One of the books I read this year, precisely this month is one that focuses on Tiger mothering. The “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” was part of no book club but a recommendation from one of my favourite people and also a wonderful fellow Mom! While she herself working on attaining a PhD in architecture she inspires me endlessly while I languidly while away my intellectual prowess and be a hands-on Mommy to my lil T-Rex. But mothering is no monkey business. We mothers are shaping the future, (yeah, yeah) battling existing norms, challenging traditions and preparing a generation that is smarter than us for sure. It’s just Darwin’s law of evolution I am making reference to 😜 your children are bound to be smarter than you. So then well, while our hearts beat and pray for their glorious future our parenting styles may just make or break their future. I think of Lady Gaga. And now I’d like to make a reference. When she was at her peak, in an interview she said how her Mom would smack her knuckles and made her play the piano for a minimum of 4 hours in a day. Certainly a product of A Tiger Mom. And then I think of the Mom’s who are wannabe cool Moms who’s kids are just that, cool, chilled and if the Gods are kind, maybe Bill Gates. So antagonistic to the Tiger Moms, the Moms who expect nothing but perfection, who’s kids have immaculate cupboards and starched uniforms are the whole load of Elephant Moms, Jellyfish Moms and my favourite the Dolphin Moms. Dolphins are my favourite animals and hence I am severely biased. But here’s a look at the Mommies of the animal kingdom. As a disclaimer I’d like to say that no one way may be right, no kids future rests solely in the hands of the mother, much as we’d like it, (it ain’t fair then that we carry our children for 9 whole months, all by ourselves and then be singularly subjected to childbirth, but then life is unfair and we must be grateful for that) mothering may well be monkey business and we all need to take a chill pill. So presenting my case for the Mommies of the animal kingdom! There are lots of animals in the wild, but let’s focus on a few, for now at least.

Starting with the TIGER πŸ… mom. Now this one is a no brainer. First of all it should be the TIGRESS mom because Tiger is in actual effect the Dad. But hey, either way the Tigress does all the work in general, hunting-gathering food, protecting the territory, having the young and then raising the young. With such a high- pressure job, the tigress then demands nothing but the best on her children. Straight A’s, prom queen, Ivy leagues whatever, the drill is that if I can do it so can you, rather, so bloody you. Failure is not an option since it never was an option for the tigress. Do unto the young as the elders do unto you seem to be their mantra. Have you ever seen a Tiger in the wild? It’s glistening cost, it’s manicured talons, that’s just how the tigress Mom is. Well turned out, immaculate and perfectly in sync with her day and her universe. If you happen to be from another universe then well, may God help you! The children of the Tiger moms are either those who reach scales of height in their life, whether they wanted it or not, or then those who develop stammers and can never value themselves high enough. It was never taught to them to be more than their achievements and hence they will only slave away their life to achieve. Or if the parenting style backfires the children then just go numb and can turn to rebel in action, word or deed. This style of parenting takes the most effort, draw up action plans, send the kids to the best tutors and make them achieve, for in their achievement lies your achievement! Given all kids are not born equal and some are inherently talented in different spheres but the Tiger Mom does not acknowledge this fact. If you polish it enough, even steel will turn to gold this one thinks! Being a Tiger Mom is a gamble for sure, and the Tiger Moms lives are seldom larger than the lives of the children.

And now for the next Mommy of the Animal Kingdom, the Elephant Mom! The Elephant Moms are touchy feely Moms and make sure to be in close contact with their kiddos for the first 5 years of the childs life. It could mean co-sleeping, tons of hugs, oodles of kisses, being around, having a watchful eye, staying close, even carrying the child around while going about tasks if the need be. Like Elephants these Moms are very strong, ofcourse they’d have to be if they carry the kids around! But still, elephant Moms maintain close contact and stay with the child, without forcing, not once chiding or even stirring the child in any particular direction. It is the parenting style that takes unconditional love. A friend of mine said oh this is so you when I was describing this style to her. No I do not co-sleep with my son nor do I not stir him (gently) in the direction I want him to go, but then yes, I never chide him and I do love him unconditionally. (Although I wish I am a dolphin parent, you’ll soon see why.) The benefits of Elephant parenting are many. For starters here is a kid who is poised to grow into an extremely emotionally secure adult. No insecurities for this one. No matter where life takes them, no matter the people they encounter, they know that they are enough, they are complete. The prodigies of this style of parenting are said to have stellar relationships, with themselves! πŸ˜€

The Jellyfish Moms are those who stand or enforce structure, they are extremely free flowing to the extent that they cannot make decisions, schedules for themselves or their offsprings. Picture a jellyfish flowing away disconcertedly all over the deep blue sea, with no goal in mind, very content and happily away. The good sideΒ  may be that the child will have to take the initiative for everything, be proactive, but the downside is probably that the child will not be able to exercise will-power or the zeal to take a stand when push comes to shove, floating away relentlessly in the ocean, as in life. Its wonderful to need little from life to be contended and free-flowing, to have no structure and no form, to be like water, that is if you really want to be so. Having great will-power is having a great sense of control, sometimes relinquishing will-power and listening to the flows of the universe may also get one to places you never knew existed, it may all well turn out for the best!

The Dolphin Moms on the other hand do not relinquish total control, they are more like partners or friends and get the kids to listen through logic while also getting the kids to do most of their work, all while lending a hand when necessary. These Moms follow a parenting style that is relaxed, based on negotiation and gently guide the child, flooding them with choices while also letting them know that the choices they make will have consequences they will have to live with. Playful, they do not take on the burden of their kids, knowing fully well where their lives end and the child’s life begins. Perhaps hard to do in the initial years, this style of parenting for one allows the parent, to have a life of their own. In a zest to give the child the best, parents end up sacrificing everything and look back at years of non-activity, something that a dolphin parent would never do. This Mom, is aware that as time goes by, the child grows and she grows too. Its a life of equality where there is no hierarchy and the child does not have to listen to Mom, just because she said so, the child can apply thought, the Dolphin Mom encourages thinking for oneself and makes it clear that help though will be offered, its up to the child to make use of it. No spoon feeding or no forcing. Such Moms are chilled, its more of a personality trait, playful and know when to leave the party!

And for the final type of Mom, the Monkey Mom! This Mom is literally the child. And the child is forced to grow up matronly and as the wiser one. The Monkey Mom wants to live like her child and does not see the child as one who needs help. They are a part of nature and they will grow she says as she dabbles with art, fun puzzles and plays on (literally) the monkey bars! Happy, eccentric and munching on smileys, mac and cheese, this Mom has not let the child in her leave. She’s full of fun and frolic, a trend that children would love in their Mom in the initial years or may even see how enthusiastic and lovely she really is. Such Moms enjoy the birthday parties, making friends with the children’s friends and generally have a very cheery attitude to life. The dishes will be done, things will move but for now lets focus on the fun they say. The kids in this parenting style never forget to laugh at the silliness in life, to never sweat the small stuff and let me add have a penchant for orange. (just kidding) But still Monkey Moms love monkeying around and the children will never know the boundary between childhood and adulthood. On the flipside though these kids may simply be embarrassed and turn into the worrywart since no one seems to be worrying for them!

There are more mommies in the animal kingdom and more ways to parent than written about here, but we can all agree that the very purpose of life is to enjoy it and as I sign off, its definitely a case of each to his own. But I would definitely like to say, in bold, caps, that, LET THEM MOMMIES BE!!!

  • The mornings are of wonder

    A sweet mention they render

With chirpy birds on a branch

And squirrels tied in a ranch

    When waketh a malely matron

    Unfurling a bleakly spectron

    Of chattering and battering teeth

And a rosy cheeky chewy tweed

    While pottering and pattering

    There is certain hammering

    Shrinking every little pride

Into the oblivion far and wide

    Nobody can question the sense

    Or the uttering fluttering lens

Of how the two chicks vent

And get their way easily lent

    The easy glide on pessimism

    Can break the sprightly prism

Making a reality ever so grim

That one can go very crimson

There is no shred of kindness

In a mind of mighty snideness

    With no love or wa

The hand on the neck choking

    Every thought or not forsaken

    One cannot absolutely breathe

    There are disdainable frets

Of being a swan among rats
